Sugar prices are rising day by day, causing significant distress to the common man. While sugar is available at ₹57–59 per kilogram in Delhi’s wholesale markets, ordinary consumers are forced to buy it from retail shops at prices ranging from ₹70 to ₹110. This situation is heavily impacting daily life; despite assurances from governments that they will prevent any shortage of sugar, the soaring prices have become a major headache for the middle class.

What is the real reason for the rise in sugar prices?

India got good rainfall every year from 2021 to 2025. But in 2026, the monsoon rains were about 13% lower than normal, mainly because of El Niño (a weather pattern that tends to reduce rainfall in India).

This lack of rain hurt sugarcane crops in Maharashtra and Karnataka, since the soil didn’t have enough moisture. At the same time, some areas got too much rain and got flooded, which also damaged the crops. As a result, sugarcane harvests were smaller, and the amount of sugar produced from each batch of cane also dropped.
